Growing up I remember my dad out in the driveway on the weekends washing and vacuuming the family cars. His car washing supplies included a bucket of water and soap (dish washing detergent), old bath towels, the garden hose and nozzle and his trusty shop vac. I’m not that old, but I’m sure this was the time before some of the highly automated car washes we have today. Perhaps there were few other options available to my dad to keep the family cars clean, but it taught me a lesson in stewardship and work whether he realized it or not. Today I rarely see people washing their own cars. I have one neighbor who does so regularly, but outside of that example I can’t remember seeing anyone wash their own cars in a long time. Life may have gotten too busy for some people, or the convenience of the car wash is just too convenient to pass up. I certainly use them from time to time and just took both of our cars this past Saturday morning. I suppose I felt it saved me some time and helped avoid cleaning up after myself at home. This post isn’t necessarily written to sway you one way or the other. I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both options. But, I must say, I kind of miss seeing people outside washing their cars, kids running around the front yard helping, and the lost pride of shining and taking care of your cars. Advantages of Washing Your Own Car Let’s consider some advantages of washing your own car : Savings You might be able to save some money . Although, the automated washes can be quite inexpensive. I paid $5 to wash each car this past weekend. You might argue that supplies, water, etc. cost just as much. Teaching Opportunities You teach your kids something when you do work at home. As I mentioned, my dad taught me some important work principles and stewardship in taking care of his resources. The lesson stuck with me all these years. Community Washing your own car gets you out of the house, away from the computer and out into your community. There is opportunity to meet neighbors and form friendships and relationships. I feel our communities are suffering today because of technology, computers, etc. Disadvantages of Washing Your Own Car Of course, there are a few disadvantages was should consider as well: Time While you have to drive to the local car wash, you might spend as much time or more dragging out your supplies, washing and then cleaning up after yourself. You might save time stopping by the wash while you’re already out and about. Seasonal It gets a bit difficult to wash your car in the middle of winter. During the winter, most people don’t wash their car, or opt for the car wash instead. Work While it’s good to work hard we all need a break. If you’re like me, I need a break on the weekends after a tough week at the office. If I have to work all weekend at home, I’m not refreshed for my work week on Monday. Personally, I’ll probably continue a combination washing my cars and taking them to the car wash. I don’t pay for the most expensive wash when going to the car wash so I don’t think I’m saving much, if any, when washing my cars at home. Washing your car at home is great reason to enjoy the fresh air, community and to be proud of taking care of your resources. Do you wash your own cars or do you take them to the car wash?
