Movie: Hall Pass

We also ended up watching Hall Pass , it wasn’t too over the top crazy…but really really close.  I liked it, the idea sounds intriguing but its not for me…I don’t have a need to do anything but DRIVE myself to work in a car.  The cast was pretty packed… Owen Wilson (I last saw him in Little Fockers ), Jenna Fischer (I watch her on The Office , the last movie I saw her in was The Promotion ), Christina Applegate (I last saw her in Surviving Christmas ), Lauren Bowles (She’s on True Blood ) and Jason Sudeikis (SNL guy).  After they both got their Hall Pass (An imaginary week to forget your married, no strings attached*), it was obvious where all of the comedy was going to come from, there were plenty of situations that helped build up to the comedy finale and then their redemption.  So yeah, kind of predictable.  I liked the chatty character that Owen Wilson played, especially when the girl dumped her top for him. Deep Thought: If you’re married, how far would you make it in this situation?  Are you a Rick or a Fred ?  Is your wife a Maggie or a Grace ? Likes: The babysitter’s aunt’s son, the babysitter (she’s kinda hot), Jenna Fischer (She’s good outside of The Office too!), Coakley (the older guy that gets all of the chicks…just the vulnerable ones), Applebees (really, that’s where all of the hot chicks are?! Syke, they are all at Chilis! Everyone know this!), Coakley’s hot chick de-bunking technique (I’m gonna try it), faux chow, and faux job, “I gotta take the trash out” (then stay’s in the car to… ), the Long family house tour, the massage parlor curtain to the dry cleaners…there are too many! Dislikes: Grace (what a whore bag, times 2, because she did it and never told), Baseball team (why would the player’s take these chicks this serious, then why would the coach go so far to take advantage of Maggie) I’m giving this one a 8/10, it was a good comedy…I’d watch it again to see the other small things I missed the first time because I was laughing.

Movie: Astro Boy

During the end of December I watched Astro Boy .  Its an OK movie, the movie synopsis sounded good and it turned out alright.  This is an animated story about a future earth that gets trashed and a city decides to literally uproot itself and float above the ground to isolate and protect its citizens.  A scientist designs an advanced robot model to help protect the city and the president asks for too much, blah, blah, son dies, replace son with really advanced robot, insert rare energy source, doesn’t like fake robot son, robot son runs away, blah, blah, robot son comes back to help city and save the day!  If you already don’t know or can’t tell, I don’t like Nicholas Cage (no link, I don’t like him and I don’t want you to look him up).  Even his voice drove me nuts in this one… Deep Thought: At what point with artificial life have a consciousness (or at least one that humans consider a consciousness)? Likes: Robot Boy not knowing he has powers, junk yard robots, the RRF Dislikes: putting junk somewhere you can’t see it (that’s not responsible for an advanced group), bad leaders (the Metro City President and his staff) It was OK and entertaining, I’m giving it a 5/10 not great, but not bad.

Movie: Total Recall

In mid-December I recorded Total Recall on TBS (yes, an edited for TV version).  I wanted to watch it because I saw something on Philip K. Dick and then I realized that I had watched and liked some of his other books that someone else converted into movies.  I thought the idea of the movie was interesting a man thinks his life is mundane and would like to do something memorable, but doesn’t have the time or resources to do it personally.  So he buys a memory implant, but he wakes up (or so we think) early into the process and believes he is a secret agent (for real or not?) and gets to Mars to continue his secret agent work since he had his memory erased/blocked.  I’m still undecided if he is dreaming or living at the end of the movie…I should probably read the book!  The downside to this movie for me was the over the top cheesy feel of the set and acting.  I’m definitely keeping an eye out for this one in a non-TV version, I also think this movie would be a good candidate for a re-make so much has changed since the set of this movie was made. Deep Thought: What type of memory would you want implanted?  Why don’t you think you could do it? Likes: The young Sharon Stone, The cabbie, aliens on Mars, mining another planet for resources (seems to be a popular plot), CRTs in a car Dislikes: Edited for TV versions of movies, apparently I missed the three breasted woman, and probably some cursing, commercials during a movie (it makes it hard to keep focused on the plot and character understanding, can’t they hold them until the end?) I like the movie because of the plot, not for its super cheese (maybe it would have been better if I watched it in 1990), I’m giving it a 7/10.
